What does this Hand Gesture Mean?

The gesture of blessing is often seen in Orthodox iconography. It is a special finger fold used by the priests during the liturgy. The “IC ХC” hand gesture has its name for a reason – each finger is associated with a Greek alphabet letter.

• Index Finger = Letter "I"
• Middle Finger = Makes Letter "C"
• The Ring finger and the thumb fold = Letter "X"
• The Pinky Finger = Letter "C"

Thus, this gesture represents the initials IC XC is Jesus Christ in Greek. (that is, the first and last letters of each of the words ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ—written "IHCOYC XPICTOC" with a transliteration of the lunate sigma common in medieval Greek as "C")
